Nonparametric Density Estimation:
Black Box Analysis for
Advanced Robotics
and Control Systems

Thus far, most robotics applications have been limited to simple environments where there is near-complete control of objects, placement, lighting...   This is because one of the major limitations of current robotics technology is our inability to construct accurate and useful representations of most environments.

Models of robotic environments tend to be incomplete and oftentimes partially incorrect due to simplifications or inaccurate assumptions made beforehand by the system design engineer.

Black Box Analysis

With black box analysis we start out without an initial model and then construct the most accurate and useful model of the environment from the observational inputs and control outputs of the robot.

The challenge becomes how to construct the most useful model of the world that most accurately predicts the behavior of the world from just the input/output stream of the robot.
